The 40th reunion of “Dallas” was held at the Longhorn Ballroom dance hall, where country music luminaries like Willie Nelson have performed. Built in 1950 by Dallas millionaire O.L. Nelms for Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys, it almost met the wrecking ball, but in 2017 a Dallas businessman purchased the ballroom and restored it. The club was recently voted “Best Country Bar” by readers of the Dallas Observer.

In his Texas Monthly story, Max Marshall quotes his father, Jay, who told him, “Son, don’t forget that, even today, three things shape how the world sees our city: the assassination, the Cowboys, and ‘Dallas.’” Visiting Dealey Plaza, the site of John F. Kennedy’s assassination, is a must. The Sixth Floor Museum has exhibits about JFK’s life, assassination and legacy within the context of 1960s history and culture

The Cattle Baron’s Ball, a charity gala that actor Larry Hagman, who played J.R. Ewing, was known to attend, is the one night when you’ll find everyone wearing cowboy boots. If you’re in town for the event, head to Miron Crosby, a Highland Park Village store for a pair of high-fashion, high-priced ($900 to $3,400) cowboy boots.
